We've had a TON (well about 8 or 9) new members join in the last few days (that's a LOT when you only have 29 members)
So how's this for an idea, introduce yourselves to our friendly little folk community.
I, just to get things started, am Danny, Founder, admin and only staff member (at preasent) of UK Folkies. I'm 26, live in North Kent and am professionally disabled. (Which at least gives me some free time to set up and run this 'ere online thangamajig)
Over to you all, who's next?

As a guest from abroad I should have waited, but maybe I can push this forum to life when I throw in second: I began learning the frailing strum about 3 years ago. My first lesson was from Happy Traum (homespun videos), who "showed" me tuning, two finger picking and some basics. Then I stumbled over the banjohangout (for me a great help although there are some other opinions to this matter My username there is "absolutebeginner". Patrick was a member of the hangout then and that was the beginning of my frailing "career". I played a little classical guitar (very little) thirty years ago and never lost my love for the guitar. Now my guitars have to share my addiction with my Saga openback Banjo. Im 59 and live with my family in Kiel, Germany. Anybody going to Hamburg some time? Kiel ´s just one hour away. Drop me a line. In order to "haul" Patrick to Kiel I founded www.banjo-kiel.blogspot.com . From time to time I post in english there, so have a look. Well, my profession? Law!

My name is Iain and I'm a folkaholic.
Been making vaguely musical noises on guitar for around 30 years, louder noises with a GDAE tuned tenor banjo for just under a year and, more recently, quiet noises with a mandolin.
I am the CAD Office Manager at the Open University.

Hi All I'm Colin (the geordie) messed around with guitars, keyboards and banjos most of my 53 years, and still trying to get it sounding right.
I'm an engineer working between the North East, Derby, Bristol and Plymouth and like Iain I run a CAD design office.
Dannys right on with this thread so lets keep it going everybody, dont be shy. I know we are scattered about the country, but you never know we might someday try to arrange a get together one day, so keep it rolling.

Well as per my "hello" post - I (sort of) play guitar & Anglo concertina. I can also pick out a tune on a whistle if you're not in a hurry - also planning to get a Tenor guitar soon. I'm 43; live in Malmesbury, Wiltshire; am a full-time stay-at-home dad for my 5-year old daughter & with a son on the way. I'm a founder member & musician for the local Morris side - see us at www.malmesburymorris.org.ukI occasionally go to sessions but I find my repertoire a bit limited for joining in much - something I'm working on. Last year we started going to Folk Camps - we've only done long weekends so far - and we're going to be at the Oaksey one in August as it's only up the road.

Howdy
Roger here - been playing guitar since i was 17 and banjo last year. I just happened to decide having a go at frailing after seeing Patrick's post on youtube. A month later i was at a work shop with him - funny how life goes.
Im 38 live near Luton, and play banjo, bottleneck blues and about any other style i fancy.
Am now in a duo (guitar, reso guitar, banjo and mando) to try and work towards getting out there and playing in public.
Am having hell of a time trying to sing and play but it is coming sloooowly ;D
Cheers

Essieandy here, 39, just approaching the end of my nurse training after working in engineering for 14 odd years, live in Aberdeenshire and started playing clawhammer banjo 3 years ago when the arrival of child number 1 meant I had to stay in the house a lot and I didn't fancy rotting my brain watching Eastenders everynight . Other interests include bikes (pedal and motor), and in a previous life use to race triathlon and fish quite a lot. Now just change a lot of nappies (now got 3 children under 3! Started late but soon caught up!) and getting comfortably chubby

Live in south Wales, teach film and television, play the banjo, mandolin and guitar. Like all sorts of music but especially blues and old time country and unaccompanied British folk singing, also Welsh harp, dance tunes and singing. Appart from this, I have an obsession with cycling long distances.

Hello Danny - and everyone else! My name is Bryan, and recently got interested in the possibility of playing the banjo (frailing) by finding Patrick Costello lessons on YouTube: You can imagine me, going through his video lessons, practising - and I don't even have a banjo I've never even handled one, so you can imagine how funny I look. Anyway, I live in Ivybridge (close to Plymouth), Devon UK, and would like to know if there are any banjo groups near me. Yes, I know I need to buy a 5-string banjo, but haven't any idea of cost. I'm a complete newbie. That's enough of an intro from me for now. p.s. just had a mini conversation with Patrick on MSN, that was exciting - he passed on this web address to me, and also the addy for Tangier Sound. Best wishes Bryan

:)Hello all, James, 50 from Bristol, started banjo 05. Spent long time struggling with bluegrass picking using Jay Buckey . com instructional material but find reading tab mega difficult . Managed to learn about three tunes but I was no good at jam sessions. Summer 07 heard of frailing and youtube, found Dobro33h then Tangier Sound with Patrick and Dear old Dad and musical life began. I post stuff as banjohopeful on youtube and you can put a face to several UK folkies members from my favorites list. cheers James. ps many thanks to Danny.
