Hi, I'm Fr. Keith, or just Keith whichever you're comfortable with. Yes, you guessed it - I'm a parish priest. I've lived in Sheffield for 2 years, spent most of my life in Yorkshire where I was born. Was a computer programmer before I was ordained, but way out of touch with all that technology now. I Learned a few guitar chords many years ago but forgotten them now and given my guitars away. I always loved the sound of the banjo and bught one a few years ago but didn't really get into scruggs, which was what I thought the banjo was about. For some reason it occured to me to look up frailing on youtube and that's when I discovered Patrick Costello's free lessons. I now spend all my cash and apare time on his crazy thing but I love it. My thanks to Colin for telling me about UKfolkies.

Well, I thought I joined up, but apparently I just posted as a guest, so I'll see what happens this time ..... Hello Father Keith, Nice to meet you! Incredible to think isnt it , a few short years ago this kind of folk gathering was impossible (Via the internet) and it has brought many people together who otherwise would not have met! Cheers! Hi everyone - I'm an ancient housewife ;D trying to learn frailing so thought it would be nice to join this Forum, having read through many of the posts and seen how friendly and helpful everyone is!
Recently I was browsing YouTube and came across Patrick Costello, (and various others) playing/teaching banjo, and it reminded me of how much I enjoyed listening to the music, particularly the banjo, at the weekly folk evenings held at my sister's pub back in the 80s. I decided to buy myself a banjo and learn to play. I settled on an Ozark open back, because I didn't want to spend a lot of money on a posh banjo until I was sure I was going to stick with it! So here I am, a complete beginner, but already finding it easier to play, and much more fun, than the guitar, and I have found Patrick Costello's videos such a help. I bought Patrick's book, The How and the Tao of Old Time Banjo, and also downloaded 'A Book of Five Strings' which I printed off and bound into a neat book! So I'm all set up! And as I have just left my job as a veterinary receptionist to spend a bit of time at home before looking for another job, this is the ideal time to get learning! I do have a couple of queries which I shall be adding to the relevant threads shortly, and hope someone will be able to advise me!
Look forward to learning more from all you guys!
Sooze.

Hi Widget. Two members of ukfolkies in Sheffield - great! - are you gong to be a frailer or a fingerpicker?
