Hi Guys (and Gals?), Been frailing along with Patrick for a while now. I too, am a big fan of he and his father's. There is another site which I have found very helpful for learning Scruggs style. It's 'musicmoose, org' (sorry, I don't know how to make this a link). The lessons are all free and there is some very interesting stuff there for banjo players (especially beginners). They've been going for well over a year, now so you can get a good idea about what they're trying to do.

Yannis, how do you get on with learning both styles? I must admit to trying the odd roll (mainly just a forward or a forward / reverse) now and again but its never "up to speed" and I don't really work on this style (although I would like to play it), I have enough trouble with Frailing!

Hi Mark. Well, once one has the frailing technique 'down Pat" so to speak (5 months or so for me) it's mainly left hand learning. Bluegrass is sort of the other way round--the left hand is where it should be and it's a case of getting the right hand rolling. When the left hand knows what the right hand is doing and versa-visa--you're in business. 'Til that happens, I'm out under the olive trees and out of earshot.

Off topic: yannis, your name sounds like greek, now the olivetree in your last post... Are you of greek origin? I ask this because sometimes I´m not sure if the banjo or the bouzouki is my instrument Have a look at the photo on my blog banjo-kiel.blogspot.com/2007/10/its-alright-now.html

i started out learning bluegrass on a cheap resonator banjo bought from ebay. I did like the sound the picks gave on some of the rolls, but i wasnt progressing very well, and then stumbled across clawhammer....havent looked back since...maybe one day i'll give it another go so i can play beverley hill billies

If the bamjo isn't your instrument, then whose is it? It looks a nice one and I'm sure they miss it. Ditto for the Bouzouki

It starts to sound like something decent 'early on' and that's why it's so much fun and a great learning venue and vehicle. But for my money nothing beats that old knee-slappin', foot-stompin,' s**t-kickin, cross-eyed children, moonshinin' yee haaaaw stuff. Rock on!

Hi, I just saw this list announced on Amazon.co.uk, of all places, and thought I'd stop by and say hello. I play guitar (both fingerstyle and flatpick), and have recently taken up banjo. I also organise bluegrass events and the Transatlantic Bluegrass School in Pembrokeshire. Nice to meet you all! Nadine www.transatlanticbluegrass.comwww.bluegrasswales.org

I started with 3 finger style, but gravitated towards frailing style. I'm still dreadful at both, but their ya go

when i started i didnt really know of any other styles, ironic really considering the shop i bought my banjo from is called frailers, i've gotten the hang of wearing the fingerpicks and thumbpicks now though, which i'm really glad of because it means i can play delta blues on my dobro properly too

I could never get on with the thumb pick. Even when I was playing 3 finger style I just used my bare fingers. That's a lot of the reason I started frailing.
