Hi danny, I broke my right leg last october in three places and dislocated the foot - it was facing backwards . The breaks have healed ok but the tendons in the ankle have not - so they got to replace the tendons with artificial ones in the ankle . The ankle joint is swollen still and if I dont get it done I will be crippled in a few years - and as its got worse the last few months I know it needs doing . It doesnt help that I have to walk the dog everyday and try to work as well- it never seems to get the rest that it needed. But there are plenty of people worse off and I sit around trying to play music etc as a way of resting it ... as good excuse as any I suppose . Thats why I put myself out with the banjo etc - as something consructive to dofor a few months. I have been working a bit extra to make sure I got beer and curry money to last me a as well - lol. So in a way I will treat it like a holiday lol.... except I wont be able to hop down to the pub . pun intended..... Blimey... get well soon Dave. I hope it all goes well. Andrew

Thanks for the welcome, sorry its a belated reply to the welcomes, just getting into gear(when you drive an ageing vwtransporter you,ll know what I mean).I live in Leigh which is near `Wigan' actually it's t'other way round. I would have used my full name but the box wouldn't let me, but Gran is a lot better than some of the names I've been called. Granville

Heya all,
I'm another newbie here. I bought a banjo back in May, after being introduced to Béla Fleck by a mate. I've played no instrument before, so i was naive in thinking that there was only one form of banjo playin' - so i started learnin' Scruggs style. I had no feel for it, and my interest waned.
Then i stumbled across Tangier Sound about 2 months ago, and have been enjoying learning Clawhammer. I may go back to Scruggs one day or Melodic if i think i'm up for it.
Lookin' forward to seeing everyone's input, suggestions and stories!

Welcome aboard Peck. (Cool name btw)
If your DOB on your profile is to be believed, it means I'm no longer the youngest here. Hurrah!
I got started much the same way as you mate, only it was Duelling Banjos from Deliverence and Foggy Mountain Breakdown from Bonnie and Clyde for me. Apart from that it's nearly identicle
Dig in mate, no one bites.
Often
Danny

Cheers Danny. Think that's the first time anyone has described the name 'Peck' as cool, heh - it's an unwanted nickname, passed down from a brother, that just stuck.

Glad there's another Bela Fleck fan here. Got two albums by him with his group the Flecktones(I wonder how he thought of that name for the group). He's on an album by Nanci Griffith 'Other voices, Other rooms ' on a track called 'This old town". Very distinctive style , can't even work out some of what he is doing let alone play it.

Hi, My name's Martin, 36, from Hamilton in Scotland. I took up the 5-string banjo after my wife bought me one for Christmas 2007, and I've been playing it seriously since the summer. I naturally preferred the frailing style/sound, so I've been playing old time stuff mainly and getting the frail/drop thumb techniques down. Also play acoustic guitar (after my teenage electric rock guitar madness left me) and am trying to learn mandolin. Pretty much playing mostly banjo just now, though.

Don't think i've ever heard that one, and i have a few gigabytes of his stuff, heh. One of my favourite albums is the recording of the 1985 Telluride Bluegrass Festival. Other than that, i find you can't go wrong with his time in Newgrass Revival. Also, don't even get me started on knowing what he's doing. I've got know idea about 95% of the time, but it's still great listening!

Hi folks,
Have lurked on other forums but they seemed generally more interested in getting that elusive "tone", i'm more interested in getting that elusive D Chord! This site looked right up my street as people seemed to be having the same issues as myself. Been playing the 5 string banjo for about 6 months now, always loved the sound and happened across Andy Perkins site one day, bought a banjo there and then. Didn't know there were different types at the time so it must have been fate that I bought an open back, I am now a "frailerholic"!! Looking forward to talking to like minded people, there seems to be a shortage where i'm from.

May be you already know, but : The full D-chord really is a must if you need the F#-note on the 4th as a bass note :-(
But how often do you need this? :-) Mostly you´ll only need the sound of the strum. In this case it helps to take the D-chord like this (from 1st to fourth string): 4-3-2-0
I found it a lot easier and you get the f#-note in this fingering too (it´s the 1st string), so the sound often is (nearly) the same as the *#%&* full D-chord. :-)))
