It's come to my attention lately that we have LOADS (like 60 odd) lurkers here.
Now, while we DID have an 'introduce yourselves here' thread, it fell so far down, I can't find it. So here's a new one that's sticky.
Come one come all, introduce your good selves.
Okay, I'm not new, but I'll start anyway.
I'm Danny, board owner (ha!) and admin. I'm in Kent, in my late 20's and suffer from depression, which means I'm legally disabled and can't work. Still, more time to be on here is only good right?
I'm mainly a guitar player, but dabble with frailing banjo too.
Who's next then?

Hi Danny and all folkies... I'm Andrew, 45 and a factory manager for a polyester resin mouldings manufacturer. I'm a woodcarver and mouldmaker and in my spare time(!) do various arty and crafty things. I hate my job now and cant wait to get out... I am enjoying playing the five string banjo and am a great fan of Pat and Patrick Costello... and I am starting to teach my dad to play now too! As Danny says, please join in, it doesn't have to be music related chat either necessarily! Cheers All, Andrew

Ahhh - I wrote my bio and posted it but had forgotten to log in with my username. Logged in and now it seems to have disappeared. Does this happen a lot I wonder and is that why there might appear to be so many lurkers? I'll have to write it again tomorrow.

Hello I am cheating here by cutnpasty my original! Eric banjobreadman from ashington landed back north last march and took a while to settle. great uncle bill encouraged me to try his tenor and he saw I could pick out a tune or two. He loaned me a beautiful maple Jedson on Christmas day and I've learnt many tunes via TAB format.I am getting the jist of a tune ,then cover the tab up and read the notation above...a lot of it seems to be finger memory. I am drawn to Irish and Scots tunes---many that were meant for mandolin I suppose.Tuned GDAE to 'fit' in. I get up at Bubbles on Tuesdays depending on my shift;and have graced ashington and cramlingtons folk clubs. The learning and playing experience has built up my confidence no end-I was down. I get to the General Havelock near Cambois on Saturday mornings for a jam with Dougy wood and George;really I go for the chips and coffee! I will take lessons eventually;prefer to thrash it out myself. Tommy Alsopp gave me some sound tips that just work for me. I do have a 5 string and have learnt the prescribed rolls..but thats all.I cannot stand the sound of it! No joking only.I just prefer the tenor now and want to immerse mesel into more tunes that have melody and where you can play with the rhythms. Thats me then No longer LURKER!

I'd like to think I'm not too much of a lurker but have probably only posted 4 or 5 times. I'm Jez, 31, live in Wednesbury, West Midlands. That's Black Country to you - if you've ever been to the Ikea on the M6 between Birmingham and Manchester, that's it. I work at Birmingham City University as a designer in a usability lab www.user-lab.com. I have been playing banjo since Christmas, frailing, simple strum, 3 finger picking and have just been playing around with Dock Boggs version of Pretty Polly in his style too. I have lessons at the Hobgoblin music shop in Birmingham. I like lots of old time and bluegrass but don't really know much about folk music post 1960s, or much about UK folk, mostly Appalachian or american old time. I also listen to other kinds of music like hip hop, jazz, indie (mostly american guitar stuff), post rock, metal, etc. That is all, for now!

Hey, I am not a lurker! I'm just shy ..........awwww! Scottish (hurrah!)46 (boo!) play clawhammer/frailing 5 string banjo and ukulele and I am currently in process of buying a mandolin. Self taught on instruments but have made great use of Costello's excellent resources, some Ken Perlman DVDs and Book ,and trawling through related Banjo/uke websites. I am hoping to start lessons with Mandolin in September (Traditional Scottish Tunes) but unsure if I will actually have a mandolin in time. Hopefully I will as I am quite excited at the prospect of learning an instrument in the same room as someone who actually knows what they are doing!! This would be a first Once I have my mandolin I will start the justification for spending out on upgrading to my "Banjo for life" The expensive one which will make be a better player, better person and mark the end of my raiding the collective piggy bank.
Of course give it a year or so and the sequel "Banjo for life 2" will be in the cinema! cheers

Sorry Danny I do tend to lurk a lot - a quick flick through and then off to do something else. Sorry - it's just not good enough.

Right then, I don't think I've ever been called anything quite as sinister as a 'lurker' before so I thought I'd better introduce myself. I'm Anthony, originally from the deep south (Eastbourne) but now living in Sheffield. Got a five string last christmas, started off fiddling around with finger picks and the like, began to get disheartened, then frustrated, then found pat and patrick, who I now blame solely for my calloused, hardened bleeding fingers as I bash through yet another folk song of the day. I was hoping that this forum would be a sort of 'banjo's anonymous' rehabilitaion forum to get over my addiction to going 'bum ditty', unfortunately you all seem to be nutty too, so there we go; I'll have to save up for the betty ford. I just got a harmonica rack too (not that I can play the harmonica), so now I can make horrible noises with two instruments at the same time. My neighbours are suitably delighted. pleased to meet you all, all the best, anthony ps. are there any other frailers surprised by how dirty their hands must be?! - where my thumb hits the head on my banjo there is a nasty brown mark - think I need to wash my hands more!

I'm definitely interested in the retreat. I have seen talk of a google group dedicated to it. Is there any chance of an invite? It would be great to get playing with other people. all the best, anthony

Not lurking or skulking heck that would have to have some deviant objective. If you have seen my name on here for some time it was likely in conjunction with my effort to subscribe to an associated link. like Tanjier Sound or Dobro33H. or in my intial attempt to search for frailing the banjo. That's when I learned frailing and clawhammer are essentially the same thing but sometimes different. Please feel free to research my travels on the internet. Most of my effort is tied into music.
foxfireguitar@charter.net P.S. No that I know you are here I just may have to stop back in from time to time. Catch me a banjohangout.com still under the pseudonum of foxfireguitar

Hi All,
My name is Pete and I live in Scarborough. Been trying to play 5str banjo for around two years now but am still not very good at it. I seem to have the basic "Bump Ditty" frailing strum down smooth and I keep attempting Slides, Hammer on's and Pull off's but my fingers get all tied up and I loose the rhythm.
Maybe I just don't put in enough playing time on the 5str as I also have a Tenor Banjo, Uke Banjo, Wooden Uke and a Mandolin. I am certainly not a virtuoso on any of them but I can play them all........after a fashion.........I make a LOT of mistakes, but I enjoy myself and that's what counts, wouldn't you say ?
Incidentally, are there any other pickers in the Scarborough area ?
Cheers....Pete.

Hi all, I`m Sandra from Gateshead and I joined about 5 minutes ago after seeing somebody mention it on the Banjo Hangout. I`ve been playing clawhammer banjo for about four years now. I also play dulcimer,a little bit of mandolin and am learning the fiddle. I don`t think I`ll ever get the bowing right but I keep on trying. I`m hoping to go to Dwight Dillers class this year.
