Just got back from the Newcastle Jam. It was phenomenal. Payson came up from York, Colin came along from Stanley with a guitarist and I kid you not a whole bluegrass band turned up with banjo, double bass, 2 mandolins and another guitar!Admittedly Colin knew one of the band but it was really unexpected and great to play along with these guys. Thanks to all who came and made it a special night. The venue was great too - the Black Bull in Blaydon. I'd recommend it. Watch this space for the next session - probably in a month or two. I'd also recommend that you arrange a jamming session in your area or get yourself along to a local session. Thanks again to all who came along. Mark.

Thanks Mark for organizing that. I am really glad I came out tonight. I feel like we really lived up to the spirit of music as a communal effort. Thanks Colin for bringing Ron and sharing those licks and stories and getting the Bluegrass Plus guys out. What a great night. -Payson

Great to meet all you guys, Ron hasn't stopped talking about it, he thoroughly enjoyed himself. Credit goes to you Mark for arranging such a good venue, and to you Payson for making the long round trip from York. Looking forward to the next one, i have a couple of beginners who are interested in coming, and Ron again of course. Heres to the next one:) Colin

Colin / Payson, I've been trying to remember some of the songs we played last Monday. I've got Cripple Creek, Boil them cabbage, I am the light of the world, Buffalo Girls?, Shady Grove and Blackberry Blossom (too fast man!). Can you remember what the others were? Cheers, Mark.

Mark I think you have most of them, I'm trying to think what the first song the lads from Bluegarass plus played, we all joined in the chorus, its a song I hadnt heard before about West Virginian girls. Ron was also singing Streets of London and we had a bit go at Dirty Old Town. We also played foggy Mountain Breakdown. You're right about Blackberry Blossom I've never been able to frail it, although I can just about manage to finger pick it, it may be worth a e-mail to Patrick for some tips.
Best regards Colin

The jam was a great night, and we must do it again after the holidays (August), as well as trying to getting an "up north session going" Payson has invited us to York, I dont mind taking a car full of geordies down (maybe after August), its not that bad a run from Newcastle, and its a central place for a lot of people. Anybody else out ther interested ?

Hi all. I've booked the Black Bull in Blaydon (Newcastle) again on Monday 1st September 8.00 p.m. All welcome. Why don't we do York later in September? I'm keen to do both. If anyone wants a lift from Newcastle Central Station - let me know. I think it would be good to have say 5 songs to prepare for in advance so that we have something to work on. There'll be a full range of abilities so nothing too difficult. Any suggestions? Cripple Creek and Boil them Cabbage down could be good starters. Mark

Hey Mark, Sept. 1st in Newcastle sounds good. I hope to have a new convert. He is an old friend of mine who has just moved up to Newcastle and bought himself a banjo. I've yet to get a hold of him about Sept. 1st. A lift from the station would be great. I hope to stay over with my mate so hopefully I won't have to run off like Cinderella again. I agree about the 5 song idea and second the idea of Cripple Creek and Boil Them Cabbage Down and would like to propose Waterbound. Here is a link to the lyrics on Mudcat: www.mudcat.org/@displaysong.cfm?SongID=7606Here is a link to the song (well a free piece of it anyway): www.folk-legacy.com/store/Media/cd41.m3uI reckon the chords in G are: | G-G-G-G | D-D-C-G | G-G-G-C | G-D-G-G | | C-C-C-C | G-G-G-G | C-C-C-C | G-D-G-G | We can plan our invasion of York when we meet. -Pays0n
