If you apply a Capo to a 5 string banjo, what's a safe, non-permanent way of capoing the 5th string too, so the pitch of all strings is raised? In the Pete Seeger book 'How to play 5 string banjo' or whatever it is, he suggests fitting a screw to your fretboard but that seems a bit too dangerous / permanent.
has anyone had success from wedging things like matchsticks under the correct fret?

I will, although I have the suspicion it may get pinged off after a few thumb drops on the string...

I used spikes on my first banjo but since upgrading to a newer / better model I haven't as yet taken the plunge and installed them on it yet. I have been using the earl's suspender capo lately and rate it quite highly (its cheap too at around ten quid).
I prefer the spikes though I must admit.

Mark, is that the capo that clips onto the 5th string tuner and reaches out and holds down the string at a certain fret? If so any idea where they can be purchased?
Cheers mate

no Danny, I think you are referring to the "Eagle Claw" Type thingy which can be purchased from eagle music. The one I have is two bits of metal sandwiching a bit of elastic, just google "earl's suspender capo" and you will find it.

I didn't work for me kev, but at least it won't cost you anything to have a go. I just rooted around the house for a suitable lid and did the rest with my pen knife.

I am aghast at anything that involves drilling my banjo.
