Hello all, I have recently started learning to play the banjo, and I am looking for tuition/help. I have been learning the basic frail strum, and a few chords, though I have mastered the 30 second pause between chords! Are there any clubs/forums in the Manchester area? :)Thanks, Eny.

I dunno about manchester, but, if you don't know about it already you NEED to go to Patrick Costello's website tangiersound.wordpress.com their are a LOAD of things their. Also I can email the pdf's of his 3 books if you want. Just email me or send me a PM here on the forum and I'll pass 'em on. Welcome aboard by the way

Hi Folks
I have been following Patrick's videos for a short time and I think my frailing is getting better by the day. However, I've noticed that I'm not really getting a good response from the 5th string (and I really like that sound when it's heard properly). I've then examined my basic strumming movements, and realised that the faster I play, the more lightly (or less firmly) I am actually hitting the 5th string (when I play slowly, it’s ok, because I’m very conscious to hit the 5th sting properly).
I'm trying to get this sorted, but I'm not succeeding at present. Is this problem common? And if not, how can I improve on this? Any advice greatly appreciated). Many thanks folks.
By the way, this is the first time I’m posting a message, so I’m a new kid on the block so to speak.
And finally, does anyone know where Partick’s Book of 5 Strings can be bought in the UK?

Welcome aboard Alex
All I can suggest is slowing right down, it sounds like you're rushing and your fingers are getting confused to me.
Try shooting off an email to Patrick after the retreat maybe.
As far as I know the only way to get a book of 5 strings is to buy it straight from Patrick. It doesn't cost much at all and I havn't been stung by custome yet at all when I've bought stuff from him.
I can email you the PDf if it helps, just send me a PM
Danny

yep, a quiet 5th string happened to me as well, tha advice above worked for me, slow down and practice steadily. It seems to help having a slow practice regularly, bit boring! Whilst I'm on, any one know where I can get a slide for my little pinkie? Cheers, Eny.

Hi Eny You can also order the book of 5 strings from Amazon.com (not sure about .co.uk) or you can still download it from the www.ezfolk.com website, there are also some other frailing videos on there. Keep with it - someone told me that the difference between a good banjo player and a bad one was that the good one was too stubborn to give up. Cheers Rogf

Hi, I've been away for a while & unable to use the net. Thanks to Danny and Eny for the advice about the 5th string. I will try by slowing down and I hope it'll work better. Thanks again. I'll keep you informed.

Alex - You are not alone - I have the same problem as you, with the 5th string not sounding out very loudly - I thought there was something wrong with my thumb but it's more likely something wrong with my technique!!! It looks like I shall have to go back to basics and stop trying to run before I can walk, so to speak! I'll be interested to know if you get any lasting improvement by slowing down your playing, too!
Sooze.

I did a search on the 'net for the Book of Five Strings, found the .pdf file and printed it off. (Lots of pages! I never did work out what it might have cost in ink and paper - probably cheaper than buying, though, and no wait for it to arrive!) I bound mine on a binding machine and it looks quite professional! But maybe you have already PM'd Danny for the .pdf file anyway?
