Manufacturer & Model *: Clearwater Tenor Roundback Ukulele
Where Purchased: Really Useful Music Company
Year Purchased: 2011
Sound *: Sounds reasonable to my cloth ears and is certainly quite bright but I must admit to a little disappointment when comparing it to a roundback guitar. It doesn't seem to have the same quality as it is not so much roundback as square with rounded corners which is the reason, IMHO, that there is not quite the same sustain.
Sound Rating *: 8
Setup *: Out of the box this instrument is fine, just needing tuning and it was ready to play. Nylgut strings, like all nylon types, need a bit of playing in, and the first week needed regular re-tuning but are now settling down.
Setup Rating *: 8
Appearance *: Smart looking instrument with a nice, not over glossy finish. Certainly no complaints on my part.
Appearance Rating *: 8
Reliability *: Staying in tune longer as the strings bed in, but otherwise, with only a fortnight's use, I've had no problems.
Reliability Rating *: 8
Components *: Nicely put together with smooth working tuners and Aquila strings. Grain in the neck looks straight. No complaints. Electro-pickup is a passive device fitted under the sound board and seems to work nicely, although I've only tried it the once on a small battery powered amp.
Components Rating *: 8
Pre-sale Customer Service: Bought over the web from RUMC's own site. No problems with the order/payment process
Pre-sale Customer Service Rating: 9
Post-sale Customer Service: Had a small query regarding the pickup which was answered well in a phonecall. Very pleasant to deal with.
Post-sale Customer Service Rating: 10
Any Other Information: This is certainly a nice instrument, despite my comments about the 'roundback' and gives a good quality sound, even in my fumbling hands. I'll post a vid so you can hear a comparison between it and it's £20 predecessor.
