I fitted a slide capo to 5th. Only three little screws ,one countersunk. More expensive than spike but wow what an improvement.

I got my banjo tutor to fit spikes to my first (decent) banjo - he used a very small hand drill to make tiny holes, then carefull hammered the spikes into the fretboard using a jeweller's hammer. He made it look easy and they worked great.
The banjos I've had since then have had the spikes pre-installed - I'd be far too scared to drill holes in the side of the neck for a 5th string capo, although they make re-tuning the 5th string pretty simple.
