I've never played bass nor felt the desire to try one - but whilst searching Youtube for a version of one particular melody, this popped up. I've never heard a bass played like this before - not even by Tony Levin.

Glad folks liked this.
I have a query ... As I said, I know little or nothing about bass guitars - but this one does seem to be strung with an unusually high tuning. I'm used to bass sounding much deeper. Any thoughts about what the guitarist has done - has he restrung it with different types of string or what?
Whatever he's done, the sound and performance are great. I've since discovered that he has a lot of Youtube uploads and a CD.
Wonderful what you can find on the internet!

Not sure what he's doing, but the suggestion I heard was that he may have been using an octave pedal or some reprocessing effect to bring it up an octave. Regardless, it's an incredible sound...

I'm fascinated by this young man's playing. Several messages for his uploads show that others wonder how he gets those tones. Try these lovely performances.
The answer to the question about how he gets that particularly unusual high tone is that he uses lighter gauge strings called piccolo strings made by d'addario.

My word, I love that song. Bones - He's using a piccolo bass, which is tuned the same as a bass, but an octave higher. This is also the lowest four strings of a guitar. That said, he is also detuned a tone.
Piccolos allows bass players to play in the range of a guitar without changing their right hand technique, and without the extra two strings, which are apparently as confusing for bassists as the lack of those extra two strings are for me as a guitarist.

Thanks for sorting that out Ray (I know what ya mean about the lack of the extra strings too, I keep running out of instrument whenever I play the bass)
