Following a fantastic weekend in Kiel with Wolfgang, I am considering the possiblity of organising a retreat here in Newcastle in the new year. I am more than happy to organise it. At this stage I just want to get a feel for how many people would be interested in jamming up north for a weekend. Anyone fancy it? Hello Boys, There's a distinct possibility I could join the throng and inflict myself on you all. But ...... could someone kindly explain ...... what is the definition of a 'retreat' Enquiring minds need to know. Regards, JHW

I guess this might sum up the use of the word for you: "The term retreat has several related meanings, all of which have in common the notion of safety or temporarily removing oneself from one's usual environment in order to become immersed in a particular subject matter."

It is a strange term as 'retreat' generally means going backwards and in this case, we hope to move forwards.
The one Keith organised in Sheffield was excellent, I'm sure the Newcastle one will be just as good. Depending on the date, I'd be up for it too.

Good point about the 'retreat' Dick, maybe we should call it a gathering?

Time for me to wade in on this nomenclaturistic thread. Our freund Wolfgang asked my opinion last winter on what he should call the 'upcoming' (now been and gone of course) Kiel Banjo Bash. (You'll have to ask him why he didn't just ask an English person...) He didn't want to alienate the atheists with a religiously connotative word in the title. He thought maybe 'retreat' had those undertones. Here is an except from my epistle to him. Maybe it'll help the Novocastrian organizers to find the correct title: Guten tag Herr Fraillingrichter. The neck of my woods are fine and dandy. Likewise my neck in them! Normally, we do painting retreatenseminarienshtic holidays in Sept. I thought you had this in mind when you scheduled the Deuchebanjoenspeilinwokenderetreaten auf Kiel; trying to minimise the chances of a Greek headless frailling presence in the Fatherland. If I am in the UK, however, at this time, trying to earn some $$$ (ausgebenpapieren), I will invade you for the weekend---at least!!! 'Retreat' doesn't really have any religious connotations, per se. It does imply at least a voluntary seperateness from the masses in an 'away from it all' kind of way. We also 'retreat into one's self' as a withdrawal (a good synonym) from society. 'Gathering' has a more 'getting together for a purpose' sort of feel. But I personally would see 'a gathering' as more religious than 'a retreat'. Druids would gather. Remember that neither is inherently, exclusively religious. 'Mustering', has an active, militaryish feel about it. You wouldn't worry too much about spaghetti sauce on your undershirt if you were mustering. It would work in america where it has a colonial, pioneering, make do-ish, come-as-you-are sort of feel to it. You would muster to form a posse to chase the baddies across the prarie. You would also muster for breakfast or work. It doesn't, however, imply great travel or vast distances. You muster in a hurry, really. And usually without musical instruments... Camp is a bit gay and Sequestration a bit legal. Quarantine would sastify local council authorities...maybe! Evacuation give the wives back home too much of an excuse to celebrate. Pilgrimage has a nice ring to it although Kiel, the Banjo Mecca of the Free World and Beyond' sounds a tad grand. Asylum, although possibly accurate, has unfortunate medical connotations. Refuge isn't bad but you may have a hard time getting people to leave when it's over.... Harbor is too nautical but haven aint. It's a bit gottsfurchtig, though, dammmit! If you don't want the passiveness of 'retreat', what about Banjo Celebration (U.S.)--Fete (Continental)--Jubilee (British) Piss-up (Irish ?) or The ErstenKielenbanjoundvolkenjamfestwochende? Now that sounds like something I'd go to!! Nobody would ever know where I went if they asked Philippa!!! Vorspung durch technik, Yannis[/glow][/glow]

Now that my wedding is out of the way, I'm allowed to play the banjo again! Newcastle Retreat 2010 Update - I've been trawling the north east for venues and I'm still looking. A couple of options I'm thinking about... 1. www.albatrossnewcastle.co.uk/The guy here said we can have a floor to ourselves for the accomodation and exclusive use of the cellar bar for jamming. City Centre location. 2. www.nationaltrust.org.uk/main/w-vh/w-visits/w-findaplace/w-wallington/This place is a national trust basecamp. Its a good size and located in the Northumberland countryside. We would be able to use the village hall aswell. £15 per person per night. 3. www.broomleygrange.co.uk/I'm going to look at this place next week. Watch this space.

The UK Folkies Newcastle Jam 2010 is booked. 15th-17th October 2010. The venue is Broomley Grange in Northumberland. Taking into consideration cost and location is was by far the best choice. I have set up a blog to keep everyone in the loop. newcastlejam.wordpress.com/If you are coming just let me know via uk folkies or the blog site. The more the merrier.... the more drink the merrier.
