Hi Folks, I have been playing 5string for some time now.........not very well I might add.........but I enjoy it. Some time ago I acquired a Tenor Banjo but I am ashamed to say that this has reposed unused in the bottom of the cupboard until a few days ago. Then I came across a whole host of videos on Youtube which have literally opened up a whole new experience for me.
Almost all of these videos are of a group of guys playing Tenor Banjos together and obviously enjoying themselves. The whole lot are inspirational and I guarantee if you have a Tenor they will make you want to play it. They made me want to dig mine out of the cupboard and start playing.
To find the videos just put wyatturban into the search facility on Youtube and a whole host of videos will come up.
There must be hundreds of 5 String players out there, who are also closet Tenor players, so hey guys, you can even frail along to the tunes with your 5 String if you wish. But, if you are like me you will also want to play along on your Tenor. Fantastic stuff, and I would be interested to know what you think.
Pete.
It's impossible to be glum when you play banjo !

Hey Jon, Thanks for the reply, the only one so far ! I too have had a go at Irish tunes and quite enjoyed the effort, but I have to say that I get more enjoyment out of Ragtime and Jazz. Like most banjoists my biggest problem is finding somebody to jam with, so I opt for the next best thing and play along with Youtube. Cheers.....Pete
Banjo players do it with strings.

Hey Jon, Thanks for the reply, the only one so far ! I too have had a go at Irish tunes and quite enjoyed the effort, but I have to say that I get more enjoyment out of Ragtime and Jazz. That sound's fine to me. Like most banjoists my biggest problem is finding somebody to jam with, so I opt for the next best thing and play along with Youtube. I suppose that depends on where you own head is as well as what is available in your area. By that, I mean I suppose I'm more in GDAE (the most common in Irish) tuning and depending on circumstances and mood, I might be using mandolin or the octave version instead of the tenor. Round here, I can find a couple of sessions within 20-25 miles to play in. I would have no idea where to begin looking for the styles that interest you/ you enjoy the most though.
