Can anyone tell me if it could be more difficult to frail with a bluegrass style banjo than an old time music style? I am playing with the bluegrass type and it sure seems difficult at times.everyone talks about the frailing style banjo as if there is a differance thanks DJW

Most of the old time frailers used a resonator (or bluegrass if you prefer) banjo, makes no difference, it's just a style thing really.

Let me clarify, It just doesn't seem as loud and crisp as some of the banjos i hear people play on daily frail blog.even though it is a very nice well made banjo.(an Ibanez artist) thanks, djw

It might be a setup issue, or simple a case of practice makes perfect. How long have you been playing?

Danny, i've been frailing a couple years. i gave upicking for after many years i still couldn't make my fingers even pick a decient roll. my frailing is really pretty good but my banjo just seems to have a differant sound than most.(just me no doubt than) thanks

I think because you are 'behind' the banjo when you are playing it does sound different from listening to someone else play. I always thought that my banjo didn't sound as loud as other peoples but my wife slamming the 'practice' room door behind her and the neighbour banging on the wall was a bit of a clue that it is just as loud. I always used to play with the resonator on when I picked, but took it off for frailing as I think it suits the style with a softer, rounder sound (imho) granthegardener

My banjo teacher is able to sound great frailing with his Gibson, but he recommended I get a 'frailing banjo' because the quicker sound decay of this style when frailed.
According to this logic, the resonator banjo should should sharper and 'ringier' (is that a word?) than an open-back, as a general rule.
Hopefully an expert will come along and correct me if needed.

Of note: a resonator will sound the same, regardless of the player's size. My open-back seems a bit muted since I've grown this great, big, middle-aged gut. I've been trying to make a wah-wah sound by striking a note and using the neck to pull the rim away from my body. You can't do that with a resonator back (bluegrass) banjo. -- Etan
