Last year I was looking to re-skin a banjo head and as it is old and with a deep crown height (see this link to a website pointed out by the Costellos for explanation of this www.stewmac.com/shop/Hardware,_parts/Banjo:_Heads/Skin_Banjo_Head.html) and akward size and neck attachment I had to resort to skining it myself. I was hoping to use something other then a natural skin for fear of tuning problems. I found some guys who were experimenting with a synthetic material and looking for people who would like to try it (guinea pigs ) and report back. ( here is a website for them: yellowstone-jewelry.com/Banjos/Yellowstone%20banjo%20head/Yellowstone%20Banjo%20Head.htm ) They were kind enough to send me enough material for a few heads FOR FREE!!!! With the idea that people could try it and report back. It was a bit of a wait so in the meantime I bit the bullet and tried out a calfskin head from Stewart McDonald. After 3 times trying I was able to set it up and the tuning issue doesn't seem to be such a problem in the end so I have followed the old adage: "If it ain't broke don't fix it" and not tried the synthetic skin. Long story short, if you or anyone wants some of this stuff FOR FREE!!! let me know.

Good grief Payson. At first reading I thought you were suggesting that you were using guinea pigs skins for the banjo head. Seemed a bit odd, then I re-read it. Phew!

it doesn't work Payson, they wont stretch far enough, you have to sew 3 or 4 pelts together first. Hamsters are much better, they are far more stretchier, and if you put them on the right way up you can store your finger pics in their little cheek pouches

Hi - I've only recently come across this site so haven't registered as yet = still a novice lurker With that in mind please forgive me if I breach netiquette with my request. I’ve recently acquired a 12” pot that needs a new skin and was wondering if any of this material is still available or if you know what the spec is?

Hello, You are the first taker so if you want some then no problem. Just send me a personal message with you address. check out the links I posted in the opening message for more info. You will need a a tension hoop. mine on my old banjo is a bit of 4mm brass square stock rod that was soldered together. The soldering broke and I taped it together! I think the most important thing is that it fits the pot well.

Hi Danny, Looks like it's time to have a period where only members can post. Seems like the morons have decided to still the pot. Is it possible to change the site setting to allow members to post and guests to read?

Hi Dick Lets not be too severe, or we could loose out on the good stuff! I started to write a post to another site recently and checked before sending to find much the same thing,so hopefully it was just an unseen computer glitch, fingers crossed. Pete
