I am considering changing the head which came with my Gold Tone OB250 LW. I have seen a Kevlar head advertised in Janet Davis catalogue as having a bullet sound with brighter tone. What are the experiences and opinions of others of this product. I have not seen one in England yet so I need to to be certain before committing myself to the import tax and postage as well as the cost of the US Dollar. Is there a head better than the Kevlar or is this the best ?.

I have been looking further into kevlar heads and it seems that it they first used by the Scots in their marching regiments on their drums which I think means with bagpipes, kilts, etc. Kevlar is quite a bit thicker and stronger than ordinary heads which means it can be tightened as much as three or four times over what is considered safe with ordinary heads. When they were first used many drums collapsed under the strain, tensioners broke and parts became bent and distorted. Drums then had to be made stronger to withstand the immense tension. The advantage of these heads is the tightness which gives them a superior tone. I would therefore not recommend them to be used on any banjo. Those who are already using them are probably not tightening them to their full potential, if so, don't, unless you want a bust banjo.

Hey Goldtopia, Last year I was looking to re-skin a banjo head and as it is old and with a deep crown height (see this link to a website pointed out by the Costellos for explanation of this www.stewmac.com/shop/Hardware,_parts/Banjo:_Heads/Skin_Banjo_Head.html) and akward size and neck attachment I had to resort to skining it myself. I was hoping to use something other then a natural skin for fear of tuning problems. I found some guys who were experimenting with a synthetic material and looking for people who would like to try it (guinea pigs ) and report back. ( here is a website for them: yellowstone-jewelry.com/Banjos/Yellowstone%20banjo%20head/Yellowstone%20Banjo%20Head.htm ) They were kind enough to send me enough material for a few heads FOR FREE!!!! With the idea that people could try it and report back. It was a bit of a wait so in the meantime I bit the bullet and tried out a calfskin head from Stewart McDonald. After 3 times trying I was able to set it up and the tuning issue doesn't seem to be such a problem in the end so I have followed the old adage: "If it ain't broke don't fix it" and not tried the synthetic skin. Long story short, if you or anyone wants some of this stuff FOR FREE!!! let me know.
