I got my Ashbury open back 5 string (£195) from the nice people at Hobgoblin, Birmingham. They do all things folky, including a good range of banjos. they have shops all over the country - just google them.
I also met my teacher there and go regularly for lessons, so all in all, a good place!

Here she is.... She is a Tanglewood TBLX5 I bought her in around 2 BC. (about 2 years before costello !) I got her for around the 200 pounds mark as a ready to play kit. Tuner, bag, strap, book, extra strings, picks, etc. (From Eagle Music (.com) In retrospect I should have gone for an open back but it has a great sound that I love. My next one will be a Somerset! (Gotta sell some stuff)

Looks like good value for money, certainly better than my banjo.

I've just realised after looking at the picture I uploaded above (Generic shop banjo pic) that my bridge is much closer to the tail piece than the photo is. Mine is also at a very slight angle too. Does it ever move in normal use. Maybe I shouldn't mess with it if it sounds OK?

Well the FB54 is no more. I sold it and went down to Andy banjo with an eye for buying the Ozark version of the Morgan Munroe Cameron or something similar. Came back with something a bit different....
I fell in love - with a restored english banjo that was built about 1900!!!Some of the parts are not original, some are glued back together, it doesn't have a truss rod, co ordinator rods (has a neck stick) etc.. It has a wooden pot bound by nickel plated brass that gives lots of sustain and the neck is a big fat tree trunk with a very prominent V in it like a Martin guitar. Andy was very upfront about it as a package and i'm under no illusions bout the risks of owning such an instrument and the abuse it won't take.
The whole experience of shopping there was great - got left on my own for an hour to try a plethora of banjos in the price range and for what it's worth i thought the Grafton Minstrel was a great banjo for the money.
Went a bit over budget but even the wife admitted she could see why ;D ;D
Am one happy fella

You're gonna need to check your intonation, if you don't know how, get back to me I'm embarrassed to say I don't! Have I missed a workshop on this Danny? Sorry, Didn't notice the reply. The bridge should be twice the distance from the nut to the 12 fret, (probably 26 1/4") It might need a bit of adjustment after that, but that should get you really close. If you need more help send me a PM or an email and I'll get back to you. Or you can check www.frets.com a VERY useful website indeed. Once you've got it set just so, you might wanna mark the banjo head with a pencil

any idea on how to post pictures on here? Hello , I will try and help.... ! First upload your image to a website like 'flickr' (I think its the best. The free account is fine) Or 'photobucket' or any other picture file storage facility. 1) On flickr, when you have uploaded it, click on 'all sizes' above it. 2) Where it says 'grab the URL' left click the box. right click on the now blue lettering. select 'copy'. 3) Log in here! 4) Write your blurb then click on the picture icon above the box you are writing in (insert image) you will now see [ img ] [ img ] (a little closer together than this) 5) click between the middle brackets and your cursor will be between them. right click your mouse and select 'paste' 6) Check 'preview' post below your text box here, 7) voila ! Let me know if you cant get it to work... Andrew
