6 Quid for 4 strings? 6 pounds! Thats haff an hour's graft. So I says to the guitarists I know to give me their old ones. I've put an 038 onto my G and a 032 onto D so far and they are fine. The 038 is flat-wound,and I like it. I saw the technique on Frets.com to remove the ball with 2 sets on pliers---leaving u with the loop.
Does anyone use lemon oil to clean and lubricate their fret board? A lad something like a shaving brush on his fretboard the other night ...what was that?

Maybe he was just removing dust with the brush (That sounds like a good tip though..hmmmm, a shaving brush... Andrew

I was given a round wound 036 guage guitar string and thought I 'd find out the difference in sound to the flat-wound I've got on. It was tougher to remove the brass ball. Once on,the sound was like shrill...sharp and sustained more. The string sat deeper in the knut and bridge(the notches haven't changed so reducing diameter from 038 to 036 is the only explanation). No its not,I changed from flat to round. In conclusion brothers and sisters, check out ya grooves. I'll leave it at that --- almost felt young

. Does anyone use lemon oil to clean and lubricate their fret board? A lad something like a shaving brush on his fretboard the other night ...what was that? I use Lem-Oil to clean my fretboard / string. Sprayed onto a cloth, wiped on then wiped off with another cloth. That "shaving brush" thing was more than likely "fast fret", it comes in a bronze coloured tube packaging. The product itself is cotton wadding impregnated with chemical attached to a wooden handle. You wipe it on, then use the little cloth that comes with it to wipe off the excess. I have used it before and still have a couple of tubes but I much prefer the lem-oil

On the subject of strings ..... I am looking for my first set of 5 string tenor banjo strings to get rid of the ones that came with it .... I know what strings I like for my accoustic guitar but have no idea on what quality I should be looking for on the banjo and want good ones ... and as usual was looking at the most exspensive in the hope that they would be ok ... but as in the guitar I find that it is not always so . So any helpfull advice would be nice . Plymouth doesnt seem to have a lot of choice so if need be i will order them online . thanks ....

Try Andy Perkins at Andybanjo.com for all types of banjo strings, he sells them in packs, singles or custom sets. They are nice quality strings, last a long time and are very reasonably priced.
I have tried rotosounds, eaglemusics own, D'addario, Fender & Ernie Ball and I have been most pleased with Andy's strings in terms of string life. They also fair much better for tone (on my banjo) than most of the other big brands and are very favourable when comparing on price.
I have no affiliation to Andy Banjo, I'm just a satisfied customer of his.

On this subject - when do you change your strings? Am used to strings going dull on guitars after a couple of months playing. Me banjo is now 6 months old and it's been played a lot.

Thanks mark ... thats exactly the advice I was looking for - spot on .... I will be ordering from him . As I said above ... where I live doesnt really do a lot for banjo players . Ericmd .... I was looking for a decent 5 strings set ( or two ) for a tenor banjo .... and my little finger on my right hand is a bit crocked as well ... due to years of holding a plastering trowel the tendons have deformed it ... so I play with a maximumof 3 fingers and a thumb - which is ok really . I got to admit that it does limit me a bit on the guitar for certain picking but its not a problem . I saw a guy on you tube playing blues with his feet only because he has no arms at all ... amazing stuff .
