I have just tuned my banjo to D minor for first time and played my first tune ,900 miles. Actually sounded ok (playing) and the banjo sounds sort of lonesome bluesy .I have played tunes in various other tunings (like open c or double C) and I think my banjo actually sounds better in these than in G. I am not sure if it is because its a novelty or if I am used to hearing other banjos in G that sound better than mine . I had avoided D minor because I only have Tab for two tunes and also I was worried that tuning fifth string from G to a might "knacker" (banjo set up technical term!) the string and I didnt have any spare strings. But string held and it actually seems to give more sound than when tuned to G. Off now to search for more D minor tunes before changing back!
