I was chatting to a guitarist on sunday who had impressed me at a gig earlier this month.Fingers just floated on top of the long wood bit. He told me he did finger/wrist/arm and neck stretches prior to playing. Just like sportsmen/ladies I reckoned. We must have looked odd while he showed me 'the moves';like signing for the deef. It does help me---I'm missing a finger tip so rather than slash the webbing between me digits these stretches do the trick. Do you know when you hold the neck with your thumb wrapping around? With me,I'd find my thumb would lock on--or grip--reducing movement up and down.Thats when I'd stutter a tune. Well now the loooseness of wrist fingers and thumb have resulted in -I think- less pressure necessary to down the string. And that means my thumb need not grip so hard. And that lets the fingers walk! I feel my picking is stronger too;I just use the wrist--probably before I'd flex thumb and forefinger.
What do you do to get ready to play? Hit the bottle not accepted as we all should do that as professionals!

Hi Eric
Ok so this is maybe gonna sound a bit weird, but i listen to what style of music i want to play about 30mins prior, or driving to play somewhere, so my brain and ears get 'in the groove', if im lucky my fingers catch up.
e.g. If i listen to too much country/bluegrass i find blues harder to play
Physically i just roll my shoulders when they get tight
