We've just had our 71st member (welcome aboard duggyk) Problem is only 5 or 6 of us actually TALK. That being the case, why don't all of you lurkers introduce yourselves now? You're all very welcome, so chip in a bit. We're only gonna be better for having you all here after all.

Hello I just joined tother week and was surprised there warnt an intro section. Eric banjobreadman from ashington landed back north last march and took a while to settle. great uncle bill encouraged me to try his tenor and he saw I could pick out a tune or two. He loaned me a beautiful maple Jedson on Christmas day and I've learnt many tunes via TAB format.I am getting the jist of a tune ,then cover the tab up and read the notation above...a lot of it seems to be finger memory. I am drawn to Irish and Scots tunes---many that were meant for mandolin I suppose.Tuned GDAE to 'fit' in. I get up at Bubbles on Tuesdays depending on my shift;and have graced ashington and cramlingtons folk clubs. The learning and playing experience has built up my confidence no end-I was down. I get to the General Havelock near Cambois on Saturday mornings for a jam with Dougy wood and George;really I go for the chips and coffee! I will take lessons eventually;prefer to thrash it out myself. Tommy Alsopp gave me some sound tips that just work for me. I do have a 5 string and have learnt the prescribed rolls..but thats all.I cannot stand the sound of it! No joking only.I just prefer the tenor now and want to immerse mesel into more tunes that have melody and where you can play with the rhythms. Thats me then No longer LURKER!

Good man Eric, welcome aboard good sir. Being the 1st to pipe up has earned you some Karma :-)
If you don't like playing rolls on your 5 string try frailing, that's what most of us here do, I came to it for basically the same reason as you.
Good to hear that you're getting out and about and not just sitting at home.
Their DID used to be an intro section, but it went way down the list 'cos no sod used it, and it's only active topics that are at the top.
Maybe I shoulda made it sticky......
Anyway, welcome aboard, now
WHO'S NEXT?

Hi Eric, You sound busy! I'm still making noises on the 5 string alone at present, and, like Danny and a lot of others here like the frailing style. Cheers mate! Andrew

Thanks for the welcome chaps? Frailing?mmm I'll have to listen to some;I have no home pc-just work. I let the jukebox play off the banjohangout site so if thee know of artistes(!) that frail on that site--let me know and I'll listen. I have few cds to chow on.in your ear by Egan;a home made one by Tyler?in Durham area, dubliners and er thats it.No there is a gem by julie henigan I have with delicate 5string stuff. Rory Gallagher has soloists on many of his tracks too. Now what I didn't like was the noise generated by Otis Taylor and his troop that toured --Bali to Mississipid theme. Youngblodd had his moments what style is that? Harris looked as though he'd never seen a six string before. I canna remember the other lad who played(leroy?)but na,I didn't get it. Don Vappie lit up an otherwise dour evening at the sage gatesheed. And another thing..... I attended a stag do in Glasgow last weekend and spent saturday afternoon listening to Muldoons Dixielandish band at Mcsorleys.Tenor player there had his tuned cgda and the way he banged out the rhythym whilst chording up the neck captured me.......I was very drunk at the time but that style is an avenue I shall slay. There are so many styles and tunings to tempt;I've made a start but can see the apathy MY PUBLIC ;D have to the trad stuff I play. They want a song so bluegrassy may come to be. eric
