Personally, I know I really do not spend enough time practicing my guitar and banjo - (but then, us poor housewives rarely get a moment to ourselves..........!)
......so I just wondered how many hours you all spend practicing, or simply just playing your various musical instruments. Do you make a point of doing it daily, weekly, or what? Half an hour here, fifteen minutes there - or dedicate several hours each day to it?

Hi Sooze Personally i try to pick up an instrument every day ( i took a guitar to my wedding day ). But then thats mainly because it descrambles my brain from the day at work. I also play when im waiting for my wife to get ready to go out - leaving them out ready to go helps a great deal. Practice in itself can be a tricky subject, quote - "practice makes permanent, perfect practice makes perfect" Rogf

Hi Sooze,
I used to make room to practice for about 15 minutes every day and about an hour on the weekends. But recently it seems to have reduced by about half! I really must try harder!,

Couple of tips i was given and they work for me. Dont leave the banjo in its case, or you wont be bothered to keep gettiging it, putting it back etc, so leaveit out, either on a stand or in a corner. Practice during the adverts if your watching the telly, gives you 45 minutes a night, even if its just doing the basic frailing strum, and it the tellys rubbish just turn it down and keep playing

I agree, keep your instruments to hand, and practice small amounts every day, even if it's 5 or 10 minutes.
A violin player (Who's name I can't remember) Said 'If I don't practice for 1 day i can tell the difference, If I don't practice for 2 days my wife can tell the difference and If I don't practice for 3 days everyone can tell the difference'
Sums it up quite well really.

Rogf - I do pick mine up every day - mainly to dust off the cat hairs, though! (Sorry). It's a great idea to practice while you're waiting for your wife - I could do that while I wait for my husband to get ready if we are going out - he always leaves it till the last minute. I reckon a bit of my banjo playing would make him get a real shift on so as not to have to listen to it for too long! ;D Andrew - I know what you mean! Sometimes you have to be quite strict with yourself I think, to really get on with it! Must get more focussed!!! Colin - I never watch the telly so can't practice during the adverts - but maybe I could have a go while I'm waiting for the dinner to cook, or something! But it's a good idea to leave the guitar and/or banjo in an easily accessible place - I do have mine very close to my desk where the computer is, so there is no excuse really, I suppose! Danny - yes, I've read that quote somewhere as well - I should bear it in mind, shouldn't I?! But you're right - even 5 minutes daily must be better than not doing it at all. EEEH! I've just noticed I've got three pretty green stars by my name now! Cool!

I found myself falling asleep/into a trance while I was practicing last night before bed. I wish I had a recording of it.

I pick my banjo up every day (as Colin recommends, mine lives on a stand in my home office). If I am working from home I will play several times during the day - just about 5 or 10 mins but mostly I play in the evenin, probably 20 minutes or so. Weekends are sometimes better for actual "practice" - I sit out in the garden with a tab and a coke.

Hi Mark - if the weather wherever you are is anything like where I am, there won't be much practising in the garden this summer, at least that's how it seems so far anyway! If it isn't raining it's blowing a hooley most of the time! :-)

I need less practice than most of you seeing as I only have 4 strings to thrash. ;D I have only just got a strap for the banjo so I'm elevating my playing position.I'm STANDING UP! Now I'm mobile,I v'e deduced the best acoustics are in the corridor between the kitchen and netty! So I can practice whilst I've got my tea on and running the bath at the same time! I have flooded my dinner and burnt the bathmat whilst thrashing Drowsy Maggie. I always start with Maggie;the tune has fingering, scaley runs,3 note brrps and lends itself to any speed.
