I've scoured Widnes and i'm pretty definite that there are no folk or bluegrass nights on here, although i've seem some really good bluegrass acts in widnes from time to time, including the great john dowling anyway, does anyone know of any folk/bluegrass nights in liverpool that are on regularly? i doubt i'll have a chance to go to one soon because i leave for the states next week, but i'm gagging to go to a few when i get back

There is a Bluegrass Jam every Thursday at the Ex Servicemens club in Helsby, which is just the other side of Frodsham in Cheshire. It is organised and run by Bryn (aka Johnny Plank) and his son Stewart Williams. From the House of plank fame. regards Mal.

Amongst the many suggestions and approaches, you could try lists such as ours at www.folkinfo.org/links/events.php where we attempt to link to mostly regional even pages maintained by others and Martin Nails excellent resource at web.ukonline.co.uk/martin.nail/regional.htmOf course even the best maintainers may not always have up to date information, can rely on others to keep them informed (and IMO, that can be hard, eg. someone might be quick to tell of their new event at the Kings Head, but might not make it clear this is the event that used to run at The Dun Cow, let alone that the Kings Head folded, etc.) and word of mouth in an area, etc. is useful and may be more accurate, may even find something an event listing doesn't know about, etc. In practice, I think even just getting to one local event even if its not quite what you are looking for and asking around there can give leads.

I'm a bit tired now, but maybe that could be another new thread for you, Danny, what's the music like where you are? I'm looking at a trip from Cromer to Norwich (which sadly since Aug hasn't really been possible) to get the sessions in but with that sort of 20 mile or so journey, I can find what I most want, and some pretty amazing (wish I was one too...) Irish style session players as well. Closer to home, I can find a couple of very friendly and easy going monthly "folk clubs" that run in the singaround (or I suppose playaround as tunes go as well as songs) but that's about it.

www.foaotmad.org.uk/Hi all, above is a link to 'Friends of American old Time Music And Dance' website. There is a lot of info there about sessions camps festivals all over the UK and Andalucia Spain. I have met some of the people mentioned on this site, Particularly 'Buffalo Gals' members and found them all very friendly and helpful. Pete Dunn ('Buffalo Gals') often turns up and joins in at 'The Prom Music Bar' session on Sunday nights and is a nice friendly guy, as most musicians are. So if you can get to any of these events, do so and meet and play along with others and make local contacts. I will be going along to the Gainsborough Festival 13 - 15 Feb so maybe see you there.
