Hi, I started late in life playing ukulele and three years later I enjoying playing various size Ukes, banjolele, guitar (not very well), bass guitar, tenor 4 string banjo and harmonica. I love bluegrass, country and folk. I have tuned all my instruments (except the bass!) to DGBE or dGBE tuning so that I don’t have to learn more chords and chord shapes and get confused switching between the various instruments.
I understand that the 5th string on the banjo (tuned DGBD, an open G) is a high g and used as a drone string (I watch YouTube tutorials a lot). My questions are:
1. If I can tune the first string up to an E, which would then be DGBE, (strings 1-4, open Em7) tuning; 2. Can I still use the 5th string in G or do I need to retune it to another note (I’ve noticed there are sometimes 5th string fitted capos available). 3. In other words, is it possible to tune a 5 string banjo to DGBE and still use the 5th string as a drone for that bluegrass sound?
i would really appreciate some advice and wisdom!
