I am now retired and though I have musical experience - in past years playing keyboards, brass, bagpipes - I now want to learn to play bluegrass style banjo. which seems exciting and challenging.
I have seen advertised a used Deering Goodtime Special 'Carolina King' closed back resonator banjo with a Deering 20/10 tone ring. It has Deering railroad capo spikes fitted at 7th, 9th and 10th frets. It has a set of 10 gauge Deering strings. It comes with a hard case. It was bought from Eagle Music in Huddersfield around 12 months ago. I know virtually nothing about banjos other than that I have gleaned from web sites, YouTube and so on.
Am I better off buying a new Deering Goodtime 2 beginners pack (includes a book, video, finger picks, soft case) and which is set up by banjo specialists Eagle Music in Huddersfield (near Leeds) in England for £539 or this second hand one as described for £495 which is advertised new at £779 excluding a hard case from Eagle Music? I might add I cannot get to visit the seller's address though that really wouldn't help as I wouldn't know what to look for. Also the normal 6 year warranty is non-transferable. By the looks of the photographs the instrument looks very clean apart from some dirt on the banjo head perhaps from the resting fingers. Thank you for your advice and experience.

Hello,
If you are still looking I have a Deering Goodtime 2 for sale with hard case picks and some other bits including a picking practice board. It is in mint condition only having been practiced on a handful of times...just wasn’t for me. I bought it a few years ago when I went to Mississippi for a family visit. I live in Scotland and would post it happily. If you are interested please email me. £450 plus postage.
