My friend recently (sadly) died and his son has asked me to sort out his musical instruments. I knew that he had a fair number but I was staggered to discover just how many he has collected over the years .. being 23 banjos, 25 mandolins, and 13 fiddles (or violins)! We have decided to sell them all via 1818 Auctioneers of Kendal, Cumbria, at their next musical instrument auction .. they offer internet/telephone bidding. I thought that the collection may be of some interest to forum members as there could well be some bargains to be had on the day. The banjos include 3 by Gold Tone, 3 by John Grey, an Alfred Weaver, a Lyon & Healy, a "The Gibson" Big Resonator Banjo Uke, etc. The mandolins include the famous Gibson A1 previously owned by Dave "Swarb" Swarbrick, possibly best known for his work with Fairport Convention, which includes an email from Swarb verifying that this is the mandolin used on all his recordings, two A-styles by "The Gibson" (c1914 & c1917), two by Fylde, a Flatiron, a Thomas Buchanan, two by Ashbury, etc. The fiddles include a Rushworth & Dreaper Apollo Style 9 1933, and a variety of German and French models. I will certainly list all the instruments if anyone is interested.
