We need to get some action going on here - it's been too quiet lately, and only Danny and Andrew seem to be regular contributors! Probably 'cos they are the Mods! ;D SO........... everyone - log in and tell us which is your most favourite tune to play on your banjo - and why! I suppose I could start the ball rolling - as a beginner it has to be something easy-peasy for me - there are a lot of songs that others can play which I love to listen to, and would love to be able to play well myself, but Wildwood Flower is the one I seem to get along with best - unless you count Skip to my Lou! Your turn now.................!

Hi sooze like playing wildwood flower as well, but not a good song for a bloke to sing, "I will twine and will mingle my raven black hair" if you know what I mean. I like playing grandfathers clock, Foggy mountain breakdown and messing about with a slide. Also have a go at some obscure Geordie songs now and then. bfn Colin

Well, i love FMB but I'm no bloody good at it :-) Mosty I'm still trying to master the frailing strum and singing Wreck Of The Old 97. I can never remember lyrics is the main problem for me.
Besides I'm working on fingerpicking guitar mainly at the moment.

Still wildwood flower for me too i'm afraid... but I do enjoy making up my own 'noises' too! Time to learn some new ones I think. Trouble is my chord repertoire is limited to four or five at the mo.!.... Would still like to learn some train stuff though...Ruebens train... orange blossom special,,,etc..

I'd LOVE to be able to play FMB and Orange Blossom Special too! Super tunes!
One problem I have, is, I find it really hard to remember where to put my fingers when I move up past the third fret - I just get totally lost. Other people make it look so easy!!! There is also always a huge pause before I can get my fingers in place for the D chord so I tend to use D7. Even the F chord is a doddle compared to that D! I must have short fingers, too, because anything that requires a stretch on the fretboard, I just can't seem to manage very well.
And does anyone else have a co-ordination problem like I have - right hand deals with 5 strings - left hand deals with 4 - so I'm forever hitting the wrong string (getting my wires crossed!!) and then wonder why it sounds wrong! I don't think there is much hope for me!!!!!
Oh well, that's my moans and groans out of the way for today!

I don't think there is much hope for me!!!!! Yes there is! I felt like that for a long time, then I saw Pat and patrick talking about how awkward the learning phase is... and patrick said, 'your hands are not to small, your hands are not too big, your fingers are not too fat, or too thin....!' And I took heart from the fact that it really is awkward for everyone to start with. In fact, while Patrick is busy with other things I might look through all of the old workshops again, I have probably missed a few as well!

I know you are right Andrew - I guess I am just too impatient with myself! Thanks for your supportive comments and encouragement - I appreciate that. Like you, I think I shall go back over all of Patrick and DOD's video lessons again - I expect they will make more sense this time round, now I am better acquainted with my banjo(s)! However, first I have to get my slow broadband problem sorted out - can't watch any videos any sense at the moment. BT should be ringing me tomorrow...........

Even though i'm banjo-less for the time being, i figured i'd join the pickers on here and cast my vote for fav tune as... dun dun dar...Cripple Creek! I really like the lyrics, theme and sound. It's very positive and laid-back. I've been trying to get it down on the guitar, not so easy a feat.

I like down in the valley, because its wistful and slow, but mainly because it has two chords.

Favourite tune to play at moment is "girl I left behind me", Tune I think I play best is "jesse james" funnily I have always struggled with "cripple creek" unless it is a really simple version, in some versions there are parts where my fingers just wont go where I want. I break it up into sections ,practice then play whole thing and my fingers start to fall over themselves again. That and having to move to 4th string 4th fret are my biggest challenges , an awful lot of songs seem to like 4th string 4th fret and its one I often miss, hitting 3rd or 5th instead

My favourite has to be Rosin the beau - it's a lovely 3/4 time tune. Also the only thing I play which sounds like I'm picking a proper tune rather than just strumming chords.
I know what you mean about the D chord sooze - my little finger will just not plant down at the same time as the others so I usually use the power D chord which is much easier.
