Hi all, - lovin the old frailin banjo, and thanks mainly to Patrick, can play a nice selection of American style songs (which i must admit i'd never even heard until i took up the banjo). BUT - i would love to play something with a bit more listening apeal for my mates. It would be great to learn some UK/international originated more 'popular' songs. has anyone worked out Lily Allen 'not fair' on clawhammer? (Dm F in verse and Gm, Bb, F in chorus) it would be great to be able to hammer out some UK style songs, not fussy about decade of song, or style, as long as its recognisable for Uk listeners.......

You've just answered your own question Alexxx, assuming you know when the chords change just frail along and sing away :-)

Can you frail with any modern day song that doesn't necessarily have banjo in it?

Absolutely, the right chords in the right rhythym is all you need. Instrumentation is irrelevent. Ok children, your challenge for today is to take any 1 song that ain't considered a 'banjo song' and come up with a basic frailing rendition.
I call Knockin' On Heavens Door by Bob Dylan or Guns N Roses depending on your perspective. Any other takers? We could even post 'em here and have a vote over who's the best (well least worst anyway)
Waddaya rekon guys?

This is right up my alley! I've been known to frail Sympathy for the Devil, Fat Bottom Girls, and Anarchy in the UK, Folsom Prison Blues, Heartbreak Hotel, Me and Bobby McGee, Your Cheating Heart, and all in public!
I know none of these are exactly new songs, but I don't think they are generally considered banjo songs.
Danny has it I think - the instrumentation is irrelevant - but I find playing "unusual" songs on the banjo to be great fun. Try it - find your song, find the chords, transpose it to G if necessary, and mess about with it!
Pete.

...just as an afterthought, and only slightly off-topic, but I've found Honky Tonk Women to work extremely well on the mandolin. Given that Ry Cooder allegedly came up with the riff originally, and he's one hell of a mandolin player, it makes you wonder...

Thanks for agreeing Pete, it did my ego the world of good.
I LOVE your version of Anarchy In The UK, great fun, you sing it well to.
I've just tried a quick version of Knockin' On Heavens Door, and after throwing in a few rests to get it sounding closer to the original I think it worked well. I'm not gonna record it tonight (my regular pc is in the repair shop until friday (damn tube strike, i'd have had it tomorow otherwise) and I don't feel like finding a mic and installing audacity tonight, soon tho people, oh so soon.)
And for being the 1st person to respond to my challenge (and for agreeing with me) You've earned youself a whole point of karma. Don't spend it all at once now.
Danny
P.S. Their's not an instrument on earth that I haven't tried to wrestle the riff to smoke on the water out of, guitar, banjo, mandolin, weird african things from bootfairs that I don't know what they're called etc etc etc

Well - OK - you asked for it! Same esnips link as above. Again it's not the best recording, it's an extract from an 'audio email' I did for a friend a while back. But I think it's enough to get the idea....
I'll tab some of these out and/or do some demos on Youtube soon (ish - busy busy busy at the 'mo...)
Cheers,
Pete.
PS - let's hear some of yours!

Here's a party favourite - Creep by Radiohead www.esnips.com/web/chrissStuff1244750560060Ok its not on the banjo, but i'm sure it would work frailed on a 5 string. G / B / C / Cm throughout. Put the breaks in for added effect. This one's recorded with a capo on the 4th (Key of B!).
